Professional Development

Module code: NU1020

This module is facilitated using a range of approaches delivered in the main in multi-professional groups that include students from Physiotherapy, Midwifery and Nursing as well as single profession groups. Teaching involves theoretical driven seminars supported by case studies and online learning resources including video case studies.

Communication is a vital part of any healthcare professional’s role. This includes nursing. Explaining healthcare theories, principles and directions to service users who may know nothing about nursing and nursing care is no mean feat. The nature of your work also means you will often have to communicate with an array of different clinicians within multidisciplinary teams as well as a diversity of service user/patient groups.

In this inter-professional module, you will work alongside other healthcare students to develop your ability to communicate effectively with service users, patients, their families and other health care professionals. You will gain an understanding of the Codes of conduct governing the practice of every health care professional along with the NHS values and responsibilities found in health and social care environments, and the holistic, multidisciplinary approaches to nursing practice. A key aspect of this module is reflecting on your personal development on your journey to becoming a nurse and future leader of the profession. This also includes developing an understanding of academic integrity and being able to demonstrate appropriate use of academic citation and referencing conventions in all written work submitted.

By undertaking this module and successfully completing the assessment to demonstrate you have achieved the learning outcomes, will enable you to also obtain the Leicester Award, supported by the university’s Career Development Service.
