Participating in care: Midwifery practice 1

This module is facilitated using a combination of lectures, online learning packages, clinical skills / simulation workshops and clinical practice and is where you will learn to participate and initiate care and support women throughout their pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal period  under the direct supervision and direction of practising midwives and other health and social care practitioners.

There will be appropriate clinical placements across the range of maternity services which will involve participating in continuity of care models, including undertaking a small caseload of women and follow them through the childbirth continuum.

During each placement, you will be encouraged and enabled to develop effective communication and interpersonal skills relevant to midwifery practice and the role of the midwife. This will involve developing a sound, evidence based knowledge that facilitates the physiology of childbirth and the care of the newborn infant, and applying this to practice. The psychological, social, cultural, emotional and spiritual factors that may positively or adversely influence the continuum of normal childbirth physiology will also be explored alongside discussions of women’s birth experiences utilising evidence from your small caseload.

Throughout this module and during your placements, you will be required to develop evidence of achievement of the NMC standards and EU requirements for midwifery practice for inclusion in the Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (MORA), including UNICEF-UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) experiences.

You will have access to e-learning for numeracy and medicines calculations through Safe-Medicate and Health Education England (HEE) Care Certificate modules and workbooks throughout this module.
