Epidemiology

Modelling in epidemiology project
The project is designed to give you experience in analysing epidemiological data using logistic and Poisson models. The project uses real datasets, which inevitably comes with some real problems. The overall aim is that the datasets should be analysed using appropriate statistical techniques and written up in a clear, concise and scientifically rigorous manner. There will be introductory sessions at the start and then support sessions during the project.
Epidemiology
We will consider epidemiology study design and conduct. You will gain experience in critical appraisal of epidemiological studies and in the interpretation of their results; considering bias, confounding and causality. More advanced epidemiological concepts and the role of statistical techniques to make appropriate inference from epidemiological studies will be covered and limitations of observational studies will be discussed.
Topics covered may include:
- Epidemiology study designs
- Causal diagrams, and causal inference, statistical adjustment, and how to adjust (stratification, matching, modelling, standardisation, re-weighting)
- Statistical techniques in the context of epidemiological study design, analysis and interpretation
- Introduction to genetic epidemiology
- Critical consideration of epidemiological papers.
