Medical Statistics Project

Module code: MD7446

The 12-week project gives you the opportunity to carry out an extended and in-depth piece of work on a real problem in medical statistics.

Lecturers and researchers propose suitable topics for projects or you can propose your own project providing it is approved. The project may apply methodology learnt as part of the course or in a new area, be more methodologically-based considering an issue in medical statistics in more detail or involve developing computer software to implement a statistical procedure.

If you have chosen to specialise you will need to choose a project in the area of your specialisation; Health Technology Assessment or Genetic Epidemiology.

Recent topics include:

  • Dealing with missing data in cluster randomised trials
  • Improving the analysis of data from blood glucose diaries
  • Does Metformin protect against osteoarthritis? Longitudinal analysis of routine primary care data
  • Updating a Mixed Treatment Comparison of Treatments for Atrial Fibrillation
  • Modelling cancer incidence using age-period-cohort models
  • Simultaneous Modelling of Longitudinal and Time-to-Event Data
  • Investigating ways to identify the direction of effect in epigenetics studies
  • Incorporating observational/non-randomised data in network meta-analyses (NMA)
  • Sample size calculation for stepped-wedge designs with unequal cluster size
  • The use of zero-inflated and hurdle models for reporting care provision for institution comparisons
  • Genome-wide association study of severe asthma
  • Power of different methods to estimate relative survival
  • Imputation of genetic data using a combination of SNP-chips

An introductory seminar at the start of the project will cover the management of the project, project skills and the expectations. You will be allocated a supervisor who you meet weekly to discuss progress but you are expected to work independently. After four weeks you will give a short presentation on the aims and interim findings of your project and at the end of the 12 weeks you will present the project work in detail in an extended technical report with a maximum of 20,000 words.
