Research Project

The Research Project module accounts for two-thirds of the overall credit weighted average of the MSc Medical Research programme. Students are matched with a research project that interests them following confirmation of their place on the course. Projects are offered from across the College of Life Sciences research departments and or in partnership with clinical academic colleagues from University Hospitals Leicester. Each year a project portfolio is released to perspective students to look through and make contact with research teams whose projects interest them before submitting their project preferences.

The Research Project module runs across the whole course, with the final dissertation submitted in late July. The advantage of this is that there will be synergy between the early formal taught module teaching on research methods and the experience of research as you start your project. In the early part of the academic year, you will have ~1.5 days a week to work on your research project. Once you have completed the four taught modules and their assessments you will move to working on your research project full time for the remainder of the course. During this time, you will attend sessions on creating and presenting research posters and preparing and writing different types of scientific document. You will be fully integrated into your research team whilst studying the MSc Medical Research, providing you with the opportunity to attend research, lab and clinic meetings, present your work and take part in other training opportunities your supervisors may offer.

Whilst not an expectation, many students’ work forms part of research manuscripts with the opportunity to publish and present work beyond the university, at discipline specific conferences and symposia. Students are also encouraged to present their work at university research days, providing them with the opportunity to prepare for national or international conferences.

The research module assessments include the research supervisor’s report, a poster and oral presentation and the final project dissertation.
