Global Cities: the View from Asia
Module code: HS7212
The role of a city is one that is ever changing. Historically, city-dwellers made up only a small percentage of the global population but, due to mass urbanisation over the past 200 years, this has grown to over half the world's inhabitants. The two countries with the highest population, India and China, have seen much of this urbanisation, with rapidly-increasing numbers of people leaving their rural lives behind for the bright lights of the big cities.
During this module, you'll take a closer look at the development of four major cities in India and China. You'll learn about the history of these cities and assess the impact that major historical forces such as imperialism, capitalism, war and revolution have had on them.
