Fundamentals of GIS
Module code: GY7701
This module provides a broad introduction to the fundamental aspects of GIS in terms of theory, sourcing data, and using software. The lectures cover data models (raster and vector), data visualisation and creating maps, spatial databases, coordinate systems and map projections, spatial analysis, network analysis, GIS and the internet, and automation of data processing and analysis. The practical exercises provide directed skills development in using GIS software to apply the theory, covering a range of thematic areas in geographical and environmental sciences. This module also provides the foundation for the dissertation by development of a research question and undertaking a literature review on a GIS-based topic.
