Eighteenth-Century Literature from Restoration to Revolution

On this module we will explore the satire and comedy written under Charles II through to the vogue for sensibility at the end of the eighteenth century.  In this period, print became truly popular. Literary forms developed to include new kinds of readers and new kinds of authors ¬– including the first professional women authors.  Along with scandalous Restoration satire, we will read best-selling novels of the period, popular poetry, and works that used new techniques for emotional expression to campaign against oppression.  Among the texts you'll encounter are the Earl of Rochester's shocking satires, Daniel Defoe's novel of intrigue Roxana (1724), the poetry of Alexander Pope, and Frances Burney's tremendously influential novel Evelina (1778).
