English and Education
Module code: EN2196
The module is based around a 10-week school placement during the Spring term, usually visiting one half-day or full-day per week (the exact dates and times to be agreed directly between yourself and the student). You must complete 30 hours in the classroom in total by the end of their placement. The module is supported by a series of workshops, some centrally organised by the Widening Participation team and others run by the School of Arts. You will complete nine hours of preparatory training in semester one, which will cover essential content prior to the placement. Topics addressed include professionalism and schools’ expectations of them, classroom management, child protection/safeguarding, introduction to lesson planning, understanding educational disadvantage, tutoring and mentoring skills. Alongside the placement, you will attend some subject specific workshops which will explore ways of translating knowledge gained in an English degree into the classroom.
