This module covers both the analysis and synthesis of discrete-time systems and the two main areas of signal processing: Digital filters and spectrum analysis. The module starts with the definition and the properties of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems, the description of LTI systems via the difference equation and the impulse response. It then introduces the z-transform as a third way of defining an LTI system and uses the z-transfer function for the analysis of LTI systems. The module covers the analysis and synthesis of both Finite Impulse Response (FIR) and Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) systems / digital fiters. Finally the module concentrates on the use of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) for estimation of the frequency spectrum of a signal.
