Tribology in Engineering Design
Module code: EG3124
Tribology is the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion – in other words, friction, wear and lubrication – and is critical in the design and performance of cars, trains, planes, manufacturing processes, sports shoes and even toothpaste.
In this specialist Mechanical Engineering module (also available to General Engineering students) you'll learn how to apply tribological principles in designing and analysing the performance of mechanical systems. You'll develop the knowledge and skills necessary to design or select components such as bearings, brakes and clutches. These allow for the control of friction, and can be protected against premature failure and excessive wear, and you'll learn how to specify the correct lubrication approach for a variety of engineering systems.
