Engineering Management and Business Simulation

This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of engineering management, equipping students with essential skills for managing engineering projects and navigating the complexities of the engineering profession. The module covers key themes such as project planning, risk management, product development, and ethical and professional conduct.   

Students will learn to apply industry-standard project management techniques and software tools, including Gantt charts, to plan and execute engineering projects effectively. The course emphasises risk management, covering risk identification, assessment, and mitigation strategies, alongside sustainability considerations. Additionally, students will explore the product development process, from idea conception to launch, and gain an understanding of the business management and legal principles relevant to engineering practice, including health and safety, contracts, intellectual property, and liability.   

Distinctive features of this module include its focus on developing both technical project management skills and broader professional competencies, such as ethical conduct, teamwork, and reflective practice. The module is delivered through interactive, work-based sessions, promoting active learning and practical application of knowledge. Assessment includes group coursework, individual coursework, and a project management report, providing a variety of opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning.
