Hate Crime

This module seeks to provide wide-ranging and contemporary insights into the key issues relating to hate crime. Hate crime has become a pressing problem for societies across the world and this module outlines what criminologists and policy-makers can do to respond to this problem. Hate crimes affect a broad range of people who are targeted specifically because of their actual or perceived race, faith, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other feature that marks them out as ‘different’ in the eyes of the perpetrator. Within this module particular focus is placed on examining the forms that hate crimes can take, their impacts upon victims and wider communities, and the effectiveness of existing laws, policies and criminal justice responses.
