Introduction to Forensic Archaeology

This module focuses on application of archaeological methodology to crime scene investigation. Following an introduction to forensic archaeology, you will explore how archaeological principles can be used to identify the location of clandestine burials, outline the recovery of human remains and associated evidence, and explore how archaeology can be used to assist in the determination of the time since death. The module will include examples of single homicides, multiple murders and mass burials/war graves as well as other types of criminal activity. You will learn about the role of the archaeologist in this field and see how techniques developed to study the past are applicable to this contemporary context. The module extends the traditional limits of archaeological techniques and emphasises the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to enquiry. Assessment is via assignments that test knowledge and problem-solving skills acquired in the module.
