Debates in Archaeological Heritage

‘Heritage’ is a very powerful idea, and we will begin this module by thinking about what heritage actually is and what it means in the contemporary world.  While it might seem obvious that ‘heritage’ is to do with the past, in this module we will learn about the ways in which political is deeply political and can have serious, and far reaching impacts on the lives of individuals, communities, and even countries. 

In the School of Archaeology and Ancient History our staff are carrying out cutting edge research in many different parts of the world.  After a short series of lectures and seminars to introduce and explore heritage, staff from the School will talk about the heritage aspects of their work, and we will explore some of the current debates and issues in heritage, and how we present the past to people today.  You will hear a lecture about key topics from around the world (e.g. South Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, the UK and of course Leicester itself) and these will be followed by guided reading and discussion seminar to follow up different views and approaches.  

You will be able to undertake your own individual project exploring a heritage site of your choice, and to write about a heritage issue of your choice.  

The heritage sector is a rapidly expanding area with an increasing number of jobs.
