Funding

The Doctoral College provides information about various types of research degree funding, including opportunities offered by the Centre itself, the University and College, and by external (national) funding bodies (especially the AHRC and ESRC). The University and College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities periodically advertise open graduate studentships and bursaries to which medievalists may apply. Please check this page regularly, and contact the MRC to ask for updates.

Small research grants

Thanks to the generosity of several private donors and the newly-established Fogg Fund, we are able to offer small grants to any student registered for a postgraduate degree at Leicester whose MA dissertation or research thesis is on a medieval topic. Postgraduate students from any Department, Centre or School may apply (e.g. History, English, Archaeology, Art History, and Modern Languages).

Students may apply at any time of the year, as needs arise. The amount of money that is available for distribution annually is limited, and it is expected that few individual grants will exceed £150. Most grants are likely to be in the range of £30-£100.

Graduate students may apply for a grant to cover any relevant expenditure directly related to their research projects. Likely costs include the purchase of microfilm or travel to archives or a conference.

Students wishing to apply for a small research grant should complete the application form (PDF, 63kb), taking care to state clearly the aspect of their research project to which this application applies, and listing with estimated costs each item of expenditure. You should ask your supervisor to sign the form before submitting it to the director of the MRC.

Research students may reapply in subsequent years for funding to cover different aspects of their project that emerge as their research project evolves.
