Third International Symposium on AI in Healthcare

About AI in Healthcare Symposium

About the event

Artificial intelligence is creating new possibilities for teaching, learning, assessment and clinical training. At the same time, its integration into healthcare education raises important questions about clinical judgement, educational quality, patient safety, fairness, accountability and professional identity.

The Third International Symposium on AI in Healthcare Education, hosted by the University of Leicester's Medical School, brings together an international and interdisciplinary community to explore these opportunities and challenges.

Building on the previous two symposia, the third symposium aims to foster meaningful dialogue between research and practice, showcase innovative work, and encourage collaboration among students, academic staff, clinicians, researchers, healthcare organisations and industry partners.

The symposium provides a space to share evidence, question assumptions and develop practical approaches to preparing healthcare professionals for an increasingly AI-enabled world.

Welcome from our organisers

The symposium is hosted by Leicester Medical School at the University of Leicester.

Welcome to the Third International Symposium on AI in Healthcare Education

Preparing the Next-Gen Clinical Workforce.

On behalf of the organising committee, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the Third International Symposium on AI in Healthcare Education, hosted by the University of Leicester's Leicester Medical School.

Artificial intelligence is transforming healthcare and creating new opportunities to rethink how healthcare professionals learn, develop clinical competencies and prepare for the challenges of modern practice. Alongside these opportunities come important questions about patient safety, ethics, professional judgement, assessment and the responsible integration of AI into healthcare education.Building on the success of our previous symposia, this third edition brings together educators, clinicians, researchers, students, healthcare organisations and industry partners to exchange ideas, share emerging evidence and explore innovative approaches to AI-enabled healthcare education.

Our programme features keynote presentations, oral research presentations across six thematic areas, poster presentations and opportunities for interdisciplinary discussion and collaboration. We are delighted to welcome distinguished keynote speakers who will share their perspectives on the future of AI in surgery, hospital care and rehabilitation education.

We are particularly pleased to recognise the contributions of researchers and innovators through our symposium awards, celebrating outstanding oral and poster presentations, as well as inspiring collaborations between students, academic staff and external partners. We believe that meaningful collaboration across disciplines and sectors is essential to ensuring that AI advances healthcare education in responsible, inclusive and impactful ways.

We hope the symposium will provide a stimulating environment in which to challenge assumptions, discover new perspectives, establish valuable partnerships and develop ideas that extend beyond the event itself.

Thank you for joining us and contributing to this important conversation. We look forward to an engaging and inspiring symposium as we work together to shape the future of healthcare education and prepare the next generation of the clinical workforce.

With best wishes,

The Symposium Organising Comittee,
Third International Symposium on AI in Healthcare Education,

Keynote speakers

Professor Shafi Ahmed

Keynote: From Scalpel to Silicon: How AI is redefining Surgery and Hospital Care

Professor Shafi Ahmed

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the future of surgery and hospital care, creating new opportunities to transform clinical practice, healthcare delivery and medical education. Yet these developments also raise important questions about patient safety, ethics, professional judgement and the potential risks of increasing reliance on AI.

In this keynote, Professor Shafi Ahmed will explore both the opportunities and the challenges associated with AI in surgery and hospital care. Drawing on his experience as a practising surgeon, academic and strategic innovation leader, the session will consider the implications of AI for healthcare professionals, clinical teams and the wider healthcare system.

The keynote will invite attendees to think critically about how technological advances can be harnessed responsibly, how human expertise can remain central to clinical decision-making, and how healthcare education must evolve to prepare the next generation of clinicians for an increasingly AI-enabled environment.

Professor Sharfi Ahmed: MD, PhD, FRCS, FRCS (Gen. Surg), PGDipEd, FFsteD; Consultant General, Laparoscopic and Colorectal Surgeon; Senior Partner, PurposeTech Capital; Professor of Strategic Innovation, University of Greater Manchester; Honorary Professor, UCL Global Business School for Health; Visiting Professor, Imperial College London.

Professor Yin Ying (殷樱)

Keynote: AI in Rehabilitation Education

Artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities to transform rehabilitation education, clinical training and professional development. From personalised learning and intelligent assessment to simulation-based education and AI-supported clinical reasoning, emerging technologies have the potential to enhance how rehabilitation professionals acquire and apply their knowledge and skills.

In this keynote, Professor Yin Ying will explore the role of AI in rehabilitation education and its potential to support innovative teaching approaches, strengthen clinical competencies and prepare future rehabilitation professionals for evolving healthcare needs.

The session will provide an opportunity to consider how AI can be integrated thoughtfully into rehabilitation curricula while maintaining the importance of clinical expertise, person-centred care, professional judgement and responsible technology use.

Professor Yin Ying (殷樱): MM, PhD (CQMU); Professor, Cheif Physician; Director of Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy, Chongqing Medical university (CQMU); Department of Rehabilitation Therapy (CQMU); Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University; Chongqing, People's Republic of China.
