Justice for Windrush Project
Our student-led team helps members of the Windrush generation and their families get the compensation they deserve. Many people affected by the Windrush scandal face complex forms and processes that feel overwhelming. That’s where we come in.
We provide free, practical support to help you navigate the Windrush Compensation Scheme. We:
- Guide you through the application process step by step
- Explain your eligibility and what compensation you may be entitled to
- Help you gather documents to support your claim
- Speak up for you to make sure your voice is heard
- Connect you to extra support services if needed
This work is part of the Windrush Advocacy Support Fund, which helps communities access justice.
If you or someone you know has been affected, we’re here to help.
Apply for compensation
To qualify, you must meet both parts of the eligibility criteria:
Part 1
- You or your parent or grandparent came to the UK from a Commonwealth country before 1973
Or - You came to the UK from any country before 31 December 1988 and are now settled here
Part 2
You have found it difficult to prove you are entitled to be in the UK and have experienced problems. You may be able to claim compensation if you suffered losses such as:
- Fees (for example, for unsuccessful British citizenship applications)
- Detention, removal or deportation because you could not show you were entitled to be in the UK
- Loss of access to employment
- Loss of access to benefits (such as child benefit)
- Inability to access services: housing, health, education, driving licences and banking
- Homelessness
- Impact on life (for example, separation from family, missing important family occasions)
- Discretionary payments (exceptional circumstances)
- Living costs
- Non-financial remedies (for example, a letter of apology)
If you meet both parts of the criteria, you may be entitled to compensation.
