Exams and certificates

Languages at Leicester offers many courses in 19 languages – each course offers its own assessments which test your reading, writing, listening, and speaking ability. These assessments are voluntary and allow you to mark your progress and depending on how well you do you will be issued with a Languages at Leicester Certificate of Proficiency with a grade of PASS, MERIT or DISTINCTION.

However, if you are looking for a qualification that is externally verified by an independent awarding body and recognised then we are a centre for the following internationally recognised qualifications:

British Sign Language exams

Languages at Leicester offers nationally recognised qualifications in British Sign Language through two awarding bodies: Signature for Level 1 and the Institute of British Sign Language (iBSL) for Level 2.

Signature is the leading awarding body for deaf communications qualifications in the UK. Our three 10-week Level 1 British Sign Language courses are awarded by Signature.

iBSL is a UK awarding organisation accredited by Ofqual. Our Level 2 year-long British Sign Language course culminates in an assessment awarded by iBSL.  It provides a range of qualifications in British Sign Language (BSL) and Deaf Studies that meet the needs of learners of all ages and abilities.

DELE exams

DELE Spanish Diplomas are the official titles certifying the learner with a level of competence and mastery of the Spanish language, granted by Spain's Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. The Instituto Cervantes organises examination sessions, while the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain designs the exams and oversees corrections and the final evaluation of all exams.

Diplômes de Français Professionnel AffairesB1 - (DFP Affaires B1) - French for Business

Professional French Exams  - The Diplômes de français professionnel are certifications designed and offered by the Paris Ile-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

It is aimed at certifying your French oral and written communication skills in the main areas of the professional world. Languages at Leicester offers the DFP Affaires B1 course and assessment. The Diploma in French for Business will enable you to show that you are able to use oral and written French in an effective manner in the principal situations of professional communication, and that you are fully prepared to handle the interpersonal, administrative and commercial aspects of company business. Japanese Language Proficiency Test 

The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test or JLPT, is a standardized criterion-referenced test to evaluate and certify Japanese language proficiency for non-native speakers, covering language knowledge, reading ability, and listening ability.
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) has been offered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services since 1984 as a reliable means of evaluating and certifying the Japanese proficiency of non-native speakers. JLPT is the largest-scale Japanese-language test in the world. 

The JLPT has five levels: N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5. The easiest level is N5 and the most difficult level is N1. There are two test dates throughout the year.

Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR)

If you are an undergraduate student at the University of Leicester, successful completion* of Languages at Leicester courses will NOW appear on your electronic transcript when you graduate.

HEAR is an electronic document issued by the University which provides a full record of your university experience, highlighting details of your programme of study, including modules, and your developed knowledge and skills. The report also includes information on additional awards (Languages at Leicester) and recognised activities that students have engaged in, for example, an employability award, volunteering or student union responsibilities.
