BCSWomen is a Specialist Group within the BCS (The Chartered Institute for IT) whose main objective is to provide support for female IT professionals, as well as mentoring and encouraging girls/ women to enter IT as a career.
There are 1,100 members in the UK and they offer countrywide events, information sharing, CV advice clinics and professional networking.
We encourage our female students to join this group. In the past, we have invited members of the group to talk to our students, as part of their studies. In 2014/15 Mary Clarkson, Chair of the Leicestershire branch of BCSWomen, gave a talk to all students taking the Requirements Engineering and Professional Practise module (CO1008).
The following sites have been recommended to us as having useful content of interest to women in STEM subjects:
- ACM Council on Women in Computing (ACM-W) - Supporting, celebrating and advocating for women in Computing. They run an annual womENcourage conference.
- J.P. Morgan Winning Women – this website focuses on successful, top-performing women employed by J.P. Morgan. Their 'Winning Women' programme is "designed to help us meet the next generation of female leaders and for you to find out about the opportunities and rewards of a career in an investment bank”
- IT's not just for the boys! organised by TARGETjobs. These events are designed exclusively for female students who are looking to find out more about technology careers.
