Course description
Course description
This course will develop your ability to clinically reason and integrate the use of botulinum toxin as part of the management of patients with spasticity and neurological dysfunction. The course is taught by esteemed experts and renowned practitioners in the field of neurological injection therapy. You will learn the latest advancements in injection therapy, patient assessment and treatment planning for spasticity management. The course will enable you to engage with fellow clinicians and peers, working collaboratively on the course to develop your neurological injection therapy skills, building confidence and competence to deliver safe and effective injection therapy intervention.
The course is a mixture of practical and theory-based learning; introducing leaners to the theory of injection therapy, cross sectional anatomy, including access to the dissection room and cadavers, ultrasound guided localisation, reconstitution of toxin, injection technique, critical analysis of evidence-based practice and clinical reasoning.
The module consists of two distinct components; six face-to-face days at the University of Leicester. This provides the theoretical and practical underpinning of injection therapy, and is followed by 18 weeks of mentored practice in your own clinical environment.
Entry requirements
Entry requirements
- Registration with the appropriate professional body i.e., Registered with the Health Care Professionals Council, General Medical Council or Nursing Midwifery Council.
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent (e.g., pre-reg MSc).
- Evidence of postgraduate development within the field of neurological rehabilitation and a minimum of 3 years working with neurological patients.
- Current case load involving patients with spasticity and or dystonia that will allow for completion of supervised injections in a clinical setting.
- Applicants should hold a current Hepatitis B certificate for the duration of the module and this must be submitted with the application.
- In-date CPR training - Certificate submitted with the application.
- A letter from current employer giving permission to use injection therapy within the applicants’ scope of practice.
- A letter of support from a mentor. Please note, a mentor must be an injector and if not a Medic, they must also be a Non-Medical Prescriber. Your mentor must be prepared to commit to mentorship for the duration of the module (18 weeks), and supervise the practical element, assessing injections in practice, signing off injection competencies, with a minimum of 10 patients.
English Language Requirements

FAQ
How long are the study days?
All study days run from 9.00am to 5.00pm.
How are the study days organised?
The study days are organised into six theory/practical face-to-face sessions and one online day.
Followed by 18 weeks of mentored practice in your own clinical environment.
What is involved in the practical element of the study days?
You will be learning about cross sectional anatomy using ultrasound and will need to wear appropriate practical kit to be able to learn with/from your peers. There will also be an opportunity to go into the dissection room and learn anatomy on cadavers. You will learn how to handle the toxin, reconstitution of toxin using placebo vials and injection technique.
What types of assessments are required to complete the course?
The course includes four assessments; a written case study, a portfolio, a written and practical safety exam:
- Written exam safety paper - (pass mark 50%)
- Practical OSCE safety exam - (pass/fail)
- A 3,000 word written case-study, which will critically analyse your use of injection therapy in a specific case relevant to your clinical practice - (75% weighted – pass mark 50%)
- A portfolio evidencing your supervised practice of 10 injected patients – this will include detailed documentation of your clinical reasoning and reflections on your clinical reasoning of your injection practice - (25% weighted – pass/fail)
Testimonials
"This has been one of the best courses I have attended. From content, quality of lectures and teaching and friendliness and supportive environment for learning. I am really grateful for this opportunity and so glad we have clinicians as passionate and enthusiastic as Gabbi and Alison who have put in so much to getting this course going for us all. Course structure
Structure
Structure
The module is structured so that your teaching is front loaded giving you more time to work under the supervision of your mentor in clinical practice. Attendance is expected at all practical sessions.
- Week One: Three days of face-to-face theory and practical sessions at the University of Leicester (Wednesday to Friday).
- Week Two: Three days of face-to-face practical sessions at the University of Leicester (Monday to Wednesday).
Following the six University teaching days, you will then enter a period of mentored practice (18 weeks), usually within your own clinical environment.
During the period of mentored practice there will be an online day where you will be given an opportunity to present and discuss a case study, and you will receive constructive formative feedback to take forward to your summative assessment. The online day will also consist of an assessment tutorial and a session on critical writing at level 7.
The module will be completed by a final assessment component where you submit a 3,000-word case study and a portfolio of 10 patients whom you have clinically reasoned for injection therapy.
