Sanctuary Seekers’ Unit

Checklist before applying for the course

Please answer the questions below to help you decide if RefugEAP is a suitable course for you. If you answer ‘no’ to any question, then RefugEAP probably isn’t suitable for you:

Do you have a refugee background?

Yes

You are eligible for this course.

No

You are not eligible for this course.

Notes

This includes people who:

  • are seeking asylum;
  • have been granted refugee status, Humanitarian Protection or Limited Leave to Remain or Discretionary Leave to Remain as a result of an asylum claim;
  • are here on a resettlement scheme;
  • have a forced migration background but perhaps don’t fall into one of the above categories.

Are you based in the UK?

Yes

You are eligible for this course.

No

You are not eligible for this course.

Do you intend to study in a UK university at either undergraduate or postgraduate level?

Yes

You are eligible for this course.

No

You are not eligible for this course because the focus of the course is not likely to be relevant to you if you have a different goal.

Notes

Maybe you have not yet applied to a university but you intend to.

Maybe you have already applied to a university and been offered a place, or maybe you have not yet received an offer.

Do you have academic qualifications equivalent of UK Level 3 or above?

(i.e. meet academic requirements for admission to a degree programme)

Yes

You are eligible for this course.

No

You are not eligible for this course because the academic level of the course is likely to be too difficult for you.

Notes

Maybe you have qualifications at the right level but you don’t have evidence with you in the UK. Don’t worry about this now. We work with organisations who can help you with this.

Do you have an English language level of IELTS 5.5 to 6.5?

Yes

You are eligible for this course.

No

You are not eligible for this course because the language level of this course is either too high or too low for you.

Notes

If you don’t have a clear idea of your current English level, you can roughly check your level using a quick online Cambridge English Language Assessment before you fill in the application form. See FAQs for more information.

Are you happy to commit to an online course for at least 10 weeks?

(This will involve 3 hours per week of live online Zoom sessions, plus 3-6 hours of independent study)

Yes

You are eligible for this course.

No

You are not eligible for this course.

Notes

Please think about this very carefully before applying for the course. If you think you may not be able to give 9 hours per week of your time for 10 weeks to this course, it would be better for us to give that place on the course to another student.

Do you understand that this is not an IELTS course and it is not primarily a language course?

(It is a pre-university academic English skills course to help you prepare for university studies)

Yes

You are eligible for this course.

No

You are not eligible for this course.

Notes

Please think carefully about whether you need a language course or an academic skills course. RefugEAP is primarily an academic skills course, so please only apply if this is what you need.

Are you able to commit to attending two evening classes per week for ten weeks?

Yes

This course may be suitable for you.

No

This course is not suitable for you.

Notes

The Module 1 classes will largely be held in the evenings, so you need to be available for two evenings per week over the ten-week period of the course in order to be able to join the course.

Have you watched the RefugEAP programme overview for prospective students information video and can you answer ‘yes’ to the four questions?

Watch the video.

Yes

This course may be suitable for you.

No

This course is not suitable for you.
