Freedom of the Borough awards
On Sunday 12 September 2021, the University of Leicester was conferred the Freedom of the Borough by Oadby and Wigston Borough Council (OWBC) - the highest civic honour the council can bestow – at a ceremony that took place at the Botanic Gardens.
As only the fourth recipient of the ceremonial civic honour given by the Borough Council, the University was honoured in recognition of its ‘commitment to showcasing the contribution and impact of its people, places and events, which demonstrates the University’s full and diverse history and steadfast commitment to inclusivity’.
The honour was first announced at a full council meeting in March this year, but COVID-19 restrictions meant the official ceremony for the conferral of the honour took place in September.
