The Centre for European Law and Internationalisation (CELI) is pleased to share the recording and full lecture text (PDF, 312Kb) of its Annual Lecture 2026, delivered by Professor Alice Donald of Middlesex University London on 8 July 2026.
In her lecture “What Have Human Rights Ever Done for Us? - Quite a lot, actually!”, Professor Donald explored the practical impact of human rights on everyday life, their influence on UK law, and their role in safeguarding democracy. Drawing on contemporary examples, she considered how human rights protections affect individuals and communities, and why they remain central to some of today’s most pressing social and political debates.
Hosted by CELI at Leicester Law School, the event brought together members of the public, prospective students, offer holders, staff, and students from across the University and beyond. The lecture offered an accessible and thought-provoking contribution to a vital public conversation, combining expert analysis with real-world insights.
