Being a considerate smoker

Life on campus is a life for all. Our campus is a place for those to enjoy, whoever wishes to experience it. In a bid to ensure this, and following on from surveys and discussions with our staff and student body, we are launching our considerate smoker initiative, in line with the beginning of the 2021/22 academic term. Find out more about what this means for you as a staff member, a student or member of the community when visiting campus.

Who are these shelters for?

Shelters will be available to staff, students and members of the community who are on campus. Once installed, shelters will need to be used if you wish to smoke or vape on campus.

Benefits of this initiative

With sustainability at its focus, each shelter will have landscaping and potted plants to support the insect population. There will also be consideration for any future shelters to be Bee friendly as we have made other considerations in relation to other wildlife on campus. Most importantly, we want to ensure that staff, students and members of the community feel comfortable with this approach. The university prides itself on being an inclusive, diverse community. This initiative ensures that those who choose to smoke can do so in designated areas around campus. It is important that you are mindful of others choices, are respectful and adhere to our guidance around usage of the shelters ensures that we provide a happy medium for all.

Smoking shelter locations

With the removal of all cigarette bins across campus, designated areas on campus will be utilised, and in time will encompass all university sites. The first shelter will be erected next to the Engineering building, backing on to Victoria Park. Once all dedicated shelters have been installed, you will need to use these spaces if you wish to smoke or vape on campus.

At present, as smoking shelters have not yet been installed, we would like to remind you that smoking outside of buildings within a 3 meter radius is not permitted as this can have an impact on those leaving and entering buildings. If you wish to smoke, please do so at least 3 meters away from any building entrance until designated shelters have been installed.
