Research

With innovative studies of major authors, such as Coleridge and De Quincey, Darwin and Dickens, members of the Centre have worked on topics as diverse as the 19th-century afterlives of Romantic poets, the discourse of the sublime in poetry, art and criticism, and Victorian death culture - to name but a few.

Our PhD candidates contribute to the Centre's thriving research community throughout their research degrees. 

Recently Dr Claire Wood has been project lead on The Dickens Code. Learn more about the exciting international project through the free online exhibition.

The Nineteenth Century Series

The Nineteenth Century Series aims to develop new approaches in scholarship and criticism on 19th century literature and culture, and is co-edited by Associate Professor Julian North and Professor Joanne Shattock of the Centre.
