Learn to speak Student

A university is a self-contained little world with its own language and jargon, which you will pick up during your time here. Have a read through some of the essentials so you're up to speed before arriving on campus:

Blackboard

An online resource containing course materials, handbooks and other useful material.

Course Rep

One of your classmates (or possibly you) elected by the students on your course to represent them on a departmental student-staff committee which usually meets once each term.

Credit

Each module on your course is worth a set number of credits which together add up to the value needed to obtain an award.

Module

An individual part of your course on a specific topic, worth a certain number of credits once successfully completed. Core modules are compulsory, whereas optional modules are those you choose from a list to make up the required credits for your year of study. Some modules are taught on more than one course.

MyUoL

The University of Leicester student app which allows you to view your timetable, find a PC, check your library loans and more. Search MyUoL in the Apple or Play store.

Peer Mentor

A student in their second or third year who helps you to settle in to life at Leicester through peer to peer support.

Personal Tutor

Usually an academic member of staff who is there to help support your learning in a more individual way.

Sabb

Short for Sabbatical Officer, one of five students elected to run the Students’ Union for a year. This is a full-time job so they get a one-year break from their course, called a ‘sabbatical’.

Seminar

A small group of students discussing a particular topic under the guidance of a tutor.
