Scholarships and bursaries general terms and conditions
Here you can find information on the University of Leicester’s general terms and conditions pertaining to bursaries and scholarships. Where applicable, specific terms and conditions related to a particular scholarship or bursary will be displayed on the relevant webpage.
Deferral and transferral
University of Leicester bursaries and scholarships are awarded for the year that you start at the University, not the year that you apply. If you defer your course place to the next academic year, you will fall under the funding arrangements within the academic year you defer to and not the year that you applied for the course.
Bursary general terms and conditions (UK students)
- Eligible students:
- must be classified as a home (UK) student for fee purposes.
- must not have previously completed a degree.
- must be full time and campus-based.
- must be registered as full-time undergraduate students at the University of Leicester.
- The maximum number of years that a student is eligible for a bursary is their course length plus one year. (For example, students who need to repeat a year will get one year’s extra funding for the first repeat year. After that they will be required to progress to the next year to re-start their bursary payments; they cannot claim another repeat year payment.) For the avoidance of doubt, if a student completes registration for another course, then they are classed as a new student so their funding (course length plus one year) will start from the beginning again.
- Students undertaking a paid or unpaid year in industry (in the UK or abroad) as part of their degree during their placement year will not receive the bursary for that year.
- Students on any year of their course where they are entitled to NHS funding will not receive a bursary.
- Students who are registered as “without residence” (only taking exams) will not receive a bursary.
- The University may review the value and eligibility criteria of the University of Leicester Bursary from time to time.
- The University is unable to make any payments for previous years. We can only assess students on their current academic year based on the eligibility criteria at the time they started their course.
- Bursaries are assessed based on the eligibility criteria for the year that students started their course. If deferring to the next academic year, students will fall under the funding arrangements within the academic year they deferred to and not the year they applied for their course.
Scholarship general terms and conditions (UK students)
- If applicable, any fee discount will be calculated on the basis of the standard tuition fee for each year of a student's course.
- If applicable, any scholarship received for subsequent academic years will abide by the criteria and specific terms and conditions as specified for the year the student started their course.
- The scholarship will not apply for periods of industrial placement or overseas exchange, or for re-sit years, or if a student suspends their studies for any reason.
- In accordance with scholarship guidelines, students are allowed to hold only one University of Leicester scholarship in the form of a fee discount. If you are awarded more than one fee discount scholarship, you will only receive the higher discount.
- Scholarships in the form of money paid to you through your student loan account or alternative mechanism are not exclusive unless specifically stated otherwise. So students may receive more than one award, provided they meet all eligibility criteria for both awards.
- Awarded students must accept the scholarship by the given deadline by responding to the award notification. The University reserves the right to withdraw the offer of a scholarship if it is not accepted by the given deadline.
- Awarded students must also meet the conditions attached to their academic offer (if it is a conditional offer). They must also join their academic course at the given start date and before the registration deadline. They must be registered as a full-time student, as indicated in the notification letter.
- Students may be asked to update the University on their study experience whilst in receipt of a scholarship or be contacted after graduation for the purposes of contributing (with their consent) to University publications and social media posts directly relating to the scholarship.
- The University of Leicester reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship if the recipient is subsequently found to be ineligible or if these terms and conditions are not adhered to. The University also reserves the right to amend its scholarship provision without notice.

Our scholarship offer
These terms and conditions apply for international scholarships where a separate application has been made and do not pertain to scholarships that are automatically awarded.
- Scholarships are not automatically extendable if you extend your studies.
- Scholarships are awarded based on the information provided in your scholarship application and your academic course application. We reserve the right to withdraw a scholarship if we are of the reasonable opinion that the information provided is not accurate.
- International scholarships are available to self-funded students only. If you are fully sponsored by an external funding body (e.g. government, business, employer, trust or charity) you are not eligible to apply.
- International scholarships cannot be combined with other competitive University scholarships. Where you are awarded multiple scholarships, the single highest-value award will be applied. We reserve the right to withdraw an international scholarship, where students are in receipt of multiple awards.
- Tuition fee scholarships will be deducted from the tuition fees charged to you as a student at Leicester, split across your payment instalments. We will not pay tuition fee scholarships to you directly. No cash alternatives are available if the total funding you have been awarded is in excess of the tuition fee.
- Scholarships cannot be deferred to the following academic year, even if your academic offer is deferred. If you decide to defer your studies at Leicester, you should apply again for our scholarships the following year, once you have an offer for the new academic year. There is no guarantee that we will offer the same scholarships each year, or that you will be offered a scholarship again after reapplying.
- The University's decision relating to international scholarships is final.
Co-funded international scholarships
- Where a scholarship is co-funded with an external organisation or donor, we will pass on details (name, title of award, course title, academic school) to the external organisation for the purpose of selection and reporting.
- Where a scholarship is co-funded with an external organisation or donor, terms and conditions and eligibility requirements are set by that external organisation or donor. Further information on these can be found on the individual webpages for those particular scholarships.
- See our privacy policy for further information on how the University of Leicester processes your personal data.
