Dr Zelalem Mengistu Gashaw
University of Gondar, Ethiopia
Dr Gashaw will focus his Fellowship activity on research surrounding urinary incontinence and prolapse in women. These topics are regarded by the Government and Health Board in Ethiopia as significant health issues; much of the focus on continence care there has been on fistula-related incontinence, and many women with non-fistula incontinence are frequently refused treatment when it is found they do not have fistula. Pelvic organ prolapse appears to be a similar major health need in Ethiopia which has been under resourced. This work will feed directly into providing patients with a voice to identify what they regard as the health needs and treatment uncertainties for these conditions. More generally, this work addresses research questions that are highly relevant to policy and practice in Ethiopia and other low and middle income countries, and links to UN Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), 5 (Gender Equality) and 10 (Reduce Inequalities). Dr Gashaw is hosted by Professor Doug Tincello (Department of Population Health Sciences).
