Profile

I am a Professor and Honorary consultant in Diabetes with a special interest in type 1 diabetes and technology. I have active clinical and research programs around education psychology and technology in type 1 diabetes. In particular my research uses neuroimaging to explore the mechanisms of hypoglycaemia unawareness and the use of different strategies such as technology and behavioral interventions to restore awareness. I have been involved in a number of studies using technology to help improve diabetes control in type 1 diabetes.

Current work is based around developing a better understanding of the impact of low and high glucose levels measured by continuous glucose monitoring systems and trying to link these data with better use of electronic health records.

I am currently chair of the Diabetes Technology Network-UK working to improve access to technology for diabetes through training education and advocacy. I am also a member of the EASD post-graduate education committee and the medical advisory panel on diabetes to the department of transport in the UK as well as an associate editor for Diabetic Medicine.

Supervision

1. Type 1 diabetes: I have expertise in most areas of type one diabetes apart from immunology I will be happy to supervise projects around intensive insulin therapy glucose management and psychological impact of diabetes in particular.

2. The use of technology and Diabetes: I’ll be happy to supervise students looking at the impact different types of technology and diabetes including mobile technologies data management as well as diabetes specific hardware

3. Hypoglycaemia: I’ll be interested in any projects looking at the incidents causes or impact of hypoglycaemia on people living with diabetes

4. Intensive insulin therapy: I’ll be happy to consider projects around barriers and facilitators of intensive insulin therapy
