Poonam Chudasama

I am a Family Solicitor with over 20 years’ experience in the legal profession. I graduated from the University of Leicester in 2006 and I completed the Legal Practice Course in 2017. I have been interested in Pro Bono work for many years and started working in the Legal Advice Clinic in September 2022. My areas of interest are in Family Law and I have an accreditation as a specialist in Domestic Abuse and Children Act cases.

Research has not really been a large part of my role in the legal profession, however since working in the law school, I have gained an interest in research. I am currently researching the use of Generative AI in the legal profession and how this will support our teaching in clinical legal education. I also have a keen interest to research the impact of clinical legal education, for those graduates who are working in the legal profession. My aim will be to conduct a research project which will last for a number of years. I also have an interest in understanding the impact of Court proceedings on young people and will look to conduct research with University students who have been involved with the Court system in some way or another. It is hoped these findings will support the Judiciary and those involved in the family court process.

Family proceedings are private proceedings and therefore unlikely to make an appearance. My Pro Bono work at the University in general could gage some interest over time.

Outside of the University I continue to practice as a Solicitor for a private practice firm in Nottingham. I am a member of Resolution a body governing Family lawyers. I oversee and support a number of student Pro Bono projects to enhance their support in the community.

The Legal Advice Clinic won the Citizens Award for Our Citizens in 2024.
