Profile

Deden Habibi Ali Alfathimy is a postgraduate research student in Politics and International Relations, focusing on outer space policy. He is a grantee of Future 100 PhD studentship from the University's Space Park Leicester Institute under supervision of Dr. Bleddyn Bowen and Prof. Andrew Futter.

Deden is on study-leave status as a space policy researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Government of Indonesia. He joined the Indonesian space agency (National Institute of Aeronautics and Space/LAPAN) in 2018, before its integration into BRIN. He has been working on international dimensions of Indonesian space policies and programme.

Deden holds a MA in National Resilience from Universitas Indonesia as a grantee of Lemhannas-Inter University Network (L-IUN) scholarship from the National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas), Government of Indonesia. He holds a BA in International Relations from Universitas Padjadjaran, Indonesia.

Research

Deden's doctoral research is around the topic of "Space Policy in the Global Space Age" with Indonesia and IR theories as the main point of interests.

Prior to his study, Deden was involved in research projects on Indonesia's participation in the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS). He focused on several issues: the geostationary orbit (GEO) utilization; definition-delimitation of outer space; transparency and confidence-building measures (TCBMs); and the long-term sustainability of outer space (LTS).

In addition to qualitative and quantitative methodologies, Deden also studies computational approaches in his research projects.
