Profile

I graduated from the University of Leicester with a BSc in Biological Sciences in 1978 and was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 1981 for my work on the molecular characterisation of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Following an EMBO Fellowship at the Université de Nice I returned to the University of Leicester in 1983 and was appointed to a Lectureship in Medical Biochemistry in the Department of Medicine in 1984 and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1995. From 2007 to 2011 I was Deputy Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences. Throughout this time my research focused predominantly on the structure and regulation of cation channels in particular cardiac and vascular ATP-sensitive potassium channels including their role in ischaemic preconditioning. In 2011 I transferred to the Leicester Medical School to develop research interests in medical education. Between 2014 and 2020 I was Academic Director/Dean of Education for the College of Life Sciences where I led on strategy on all matters relating to undergraduate and postgraduate students and the delivery of teaching across the four Schools in the College.
