Policymakers discuss key issues during Leicester visit

The University was delighted to host a programme of policy discussions with colleagues from the Department for Education and Department for Science Innovation and Technology.

The programme provided the opportunity to discuss key policy issues in the Higher Education (HE), research and skills landscape, which will inform national policies including the upcoming HE Reform Bill, Industrial Strategy, and International Education Strategy. These discussions were held with staff, students and community partners.

Colleagues were joined by a range of policymakers leading on aspects of government policy including financial sustainability, post-16 skills, lifelong learning entitlement, and civic engagement.

The programme also showcased students from MedRACE, Legal Clinic, and the Black Leaders Programme.

The programme ended with a visit to Space Park Leicester, allowing participants the opportunity to meet with Industry Partners based at SPL and NSC partnership. There were demonstrations and experiments to showcase STEM and inspire participation, as well as a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities and functionality of Space Park Leicester that supports economic growth, skills and innovation.

President and Vice-Chancellor Nishan Canagarajah said: “As a University, we are committed to ensuring our education and research benefits society and our communities. We were delighted to showcase our leading work in widening participation, inclusive education, research, economic development, civic engagement and international partnerships. I was thrilled that so many of our staff, students, partners, and community members were able to join the discussions and have their voices heard. It is vitally important that universities engage with national policymakers to ensure we develop a sector that delivers for the UK.”
