Leicester signs up to the Turing University Network

Professor Sarah Davies, Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of the College of Science and Engineering.

The University of Leicester’s research in the areas of data science and artificial intelligence has been given a boost by the news it has become one of 29 new members of the Alan Turing Institute’s university network.

The Turing University Network offers UK universities, with an interest in data science and AI, the opportunity to engage and collaborate both with the Institute and its broader networks in academia, industry and the public sector.

It will also connect universities across the data science and AI ecosystem, provide access to bespoke network activity and encourage collaborations as opportunities arise.

Professor Sarah Davies, Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of the College of Science and Engineering, said: “Becoming a member of the Alan Turing Institute’s university network recognises the University’s world-class research and education in data science and artificial intelligence and our strategic aims are aligned with those of the Turing Institute.

“Our sustainable research in artificial intelligence, data analytics and modelling focuses on data-driven AI systems that are resilient, robust, trustworthy and adaptable to changing operational conditions. As a University we are developing graduates who have adaptable technical foundations and are ready to evolve as technologies shift. I am delighted that we are members of this prestigious network.”

The network first launched as a pilot in April 2023 with 36 universities from the Turing’s university partners and Turing Network Development Award recipients. An open call for new members was then launched in early summer 2023.

It is a key component of The Alan Turing Institute’s strategy and supports the Institute in achieving its three ambitious goals: advance world-class research and apply it to national and global challenges, build skills for the future, and drive an informed public conversation.

Dr Jean Innes, Chief Executive Officer of The Alan Turing Institute, said: “We’re really pleased to welcome our new members to the network. We hope that they will benefit from being part of our data science and AI group and find opportunities for new, meaningful collaborations across the data science and AI landscape.”
