Love Island star Dr Alex George to visit University to discuss mental health

Love Island star and Youth Mental Health Ambassador, Dr Alex George, will visit the University of Leicester to talk to students about the importance of protecting their mental health.

Alex has strongly campaigned for mental health support since he lost his brother to suicide in 2020. He was appointed UK Youth Mental Health Ambassador by the Prime Minister last year and uses both his clinical expertise as a qualified doctor and his personal experience to champion mental health support for young people. He also sits on the Mental Health in Education Action Group, which is chaired by the Children’s Minister and Universities Minister, to look at how to support young people with their wellbeing in school and university environments.

Citizens in Residence: Dr Alex George will take place on Tuesday 22nd March. Alex will deliver a presentation to all students on key mental health topics such as the impact of social media on mental health, the importance of early intervention and support, and the stigma surrounding men’s mental health. He will also hold a separate question and answer session with medical students to discuss his personal struggles and challenges at medical school.

The University of Leicester has a dedicated Mental Health Hub, which promotes healthy habits for positive mental health. This includes the MyWellbeing app, which empowers students to make different kinds of healthy changes, including physical, mental, social and financial. The University has also established a working group to provide an ongoing review into mental health support services. This ensures that students have access to help whenever and wherever they need it.

Citizens in Residence is one of a number of events being held at the University of Leicester to mark its Centenary year. The University is hosting a series of talks and exhibitions to debate key topics and challenges in 2022. The programme has been designed to engage and inspire as many members of the local community as possible.
