Leicester Pride 2020 launches online – “still celebrating, just in a different way”

Pride 2020

Virtual Pride Leicester 2020

Today the University of Leicester and Leicester Students’ Union are delighted to join Leicester Pride 2020, along with fellow universities, and Students’ Unions at, De Montfort and Loughborough.

During the next two weeks we have a wide range of online events planned as celebration of our LGBT+ community and to bring the whole community together even when w e are apart. Staff and students have also produced a video, talking about their experiences of being LGBT at Leicester.

University of Leicester Students’ Union Liberation Officer Tony Magaia says: “I feel supported and seen at Leicester where I’m able to live authentically as my LGBT self” while LGBT+ Society President Tara Devonport says “Pride is normally my favourite time of year and I’m so happy that we don’t have to give that up and can still celebrate, just in a different way.”

Dr Angie Pears, Interim Associate Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, said: “Each year the University takes part in Leicester Pride, as the City and region stand alongside communities across the world celebrating the diverse identities, achievements and dignity of LGBT+ people. Pride celebrates the hard-won rights and achievements of the LGBT+ community, whilst recognising the continued struggle to be visible, heard and treated with dignity.

“Whilst our circumstances this year mean that we can’t come together for Pride in our usual way, our virtual Pride celebrations will give visibility to the University’s LGBT+ community and celebrate our diverse identities at a time when it is more vital than ever to remain connected. This year, we celebrate alongside De Montfort University and the Loughborough University to give strength and unity to our LGBT+ university student and staff communities.”

The Leicester Pride 2020 events, all taking place through Microsoft Teams, include:

  • Quiz night – with an LGBT+ theme
  • Queer and Corona – a discussion of the impact of COVID-19 on the LGBT+ community
  • Beyond LGBT: Sexuality, Research and Academia – a discussion of academic research addressing and affecting the LGBT+ community.
