Enhancing research and impact through collaboration

National event at Leicester brings together international Rutherford Fellows to celebrate interdisciplinary research.

The Leicester Institute for Advanced Studies is set to welcome researchers from more than 20 countries to explore the future landscape of interdisciplinary research.

The event, ‘Interdisciplinary Futures: Enhancing research and impact through collaboration’, hosted at College Court, will be attended by international Rutherford Fellows currently based at institutions across the UK.

The Fellows, funded by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) are all highly skilled researchers from around world. They will also be joined by representatives from BEIS, Universities UK International and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Professor Lisa Smith, Director of the Leicester Institute for Advanced Studies said: “Interdisciplinary research is at the heart of addressing complex challenges and achieving impact. This event provides an opportunity for Rutherford Fellows from across the UK and a diverse range of disciplines to come together and explore how interdisciplinary approaches can enhance their research projects and careers.”

The event will include interactive workshop sessions to enable networking and communication between fellows, and the development of new research collaborations beyond their fellowship programme.

Professor Paul van Gardingen, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor: Global Engagement at the University of Leicester said: “I am delighted to welcome the current cohort of the UK’s Rutherford Fellows to the workshops we are hosting at the University of Leicester. The Fellows will be sharing their experiences and together will explore ways of enhancing the interdisciplinary nature of their research and how this can enhance impact and the benefit for society.

“It’s a real pleasure to be able to welcome such a talented group of early career professionals who are benefitting from the UK’s investment in the Rutherford Fellowship Programme. The University of Leicester is very pleased to be able to host this first event that brings Rutherford Fellows together and we look forward to the outcomes of their work.”
