Leicester nominated for two Learning on Screen Awards

The University has been nominated for two awards at the 12th annual Learning On Screen Awards for its HeForShe video which pledges its commitment to the U.N. Women's solidarity movement for gender equality and a video showing the DNA Analysis and Conclusion of the remains of King Richard III.

The Awards, held by the British Universities Film & Video Council, are the UK’s only celebration of film and media production in education and aim to recognise the innovative ways organisations use film and media to educate.

HeForShe - nominated for General Education Non-broadcast Award

Leicester was invited by the United Nations to be one of just ten universities in the ‘10x10x10 IMPACT Champions’ programme. HeForShe was formally launched in the UK with a bus tour in September/October last year which started in Leicester.

Our in-house team comprising Hayley Evans, video producer and Amy Cory, former Multimedia News Officer, produced the University’s HeForShe video and Jonathan Sisson, Digital Content Officer came up with the concept.

In our video, members of the University’s community discuss their experiences of being treated differently because of their gender, explain why movements like HeForShe are important in helping to achieve gender equality and describe their hopes for the future.

Richard III - The DNA Analysis & Conclusion - nominated for General In-house Production Award

The film, directed by the University's video producer Carl Vivian and produced by Dr Turi King and Professor Kevin Schϋrer, looks at the findings of the genetic and genealogical analysis in the King Richard III case. This includes coverage of all the genealogical research, and the results of the mitochondrial and Y chromosome analysis.

Jon Shears, Head of the Creative Team at the University, said: “It's a great compliment to the creativity of our in-house team to be nominated for two Learning On Screen Award. Simple ideas can be surprisingly difficult to generate but are often the most effective. We are so proud to be nominated alongside large production corporations such as the BBC."
