Major international conference on adult education coming to the University of Leicester
The Standing Conference on University Teaching and Research in the Education of Adults (SCUTREA) will be hosted by the Vaughan Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Leicester in July 2016.
SCUTREA was established in 1971 as a network of adult educators involved in researching and teaching adults. A three day conference takes places each summer bringing together members and colleagues from across the globe to promote adult education research.
The theme of the 2016 conference will be 'Adult Education in Austere Times' and will explore the tensions between the politics of austerity and the benefits of adult education.
Dr Nalita James from the Vaughan Centre for Lifelong Learning, who is a Council Member for SCUTREA said: ‘the lack of government investment in adult education has come at a time when the UK has an ageing population and people have extended working lives. In addition, the introduction of tuition fees in higher education has led to a major decline in mature student numbers, especially in part-time provision. The conference is timely, exploring how investment in adult education can support a stronger economy, promote social mobility and well-being, and offer those with the greatest need, opportunities to contribute to society.’
Dr Jim Crowther, Senior Lecturer in Community Education in the School of Education, University of Edinburgh will deliver the key note speech at the event.
The conference will take place from Tuesday 5 to Thursday 7 July 2016 at College Court Conference Centre, University of Leicester.
