Automatic control systems are an essential part of modern engineering, underpinning technologies ranging from household appliances and industrial machinery to vehicles and aircrafts. This module introduces the principles of control engineering, covering how engineers model, analyse and regulate the behaviour of engineering systems to achieve stability, performance and reliability.
You will learn how to model mechanical and electrical systems using mathematical techniques and explore how engineers analyse and predict the behaviour of dynamic systems. This module introduces key tools used in control engineering, including Laplace transforms and transfer functions, providing the foundation for understanding how modern control systems are designed and evaluated.
Building on these fundamentals, you will investigate how feedback control can be used to improve the performance and robustness of engineering systems. You'll gain experience in analysing system stability, assessing performance requirements, and designing simple control systems, while developing an appreciation of the crucial role that control engineering plays in modern products and technologies.
