Precision Health in Action: Phage therapy
Module code: MB7406
Foundations in Bacteriophage Therapy
The module will provide an in-depth exploration of bacteriophages and their therapeutic potential. An overview of fundamental phage biology will be given including, phage isolation, phage structure, infection mechanisms and classification of phages. Topics will cover phage-lifecycles (lytic, lysogenic and chronic), phage-host interactions, phage-mammalian cell interactions and the regulatory mechanisms that cover these processes.
Bacteriophage genomics will be introduced, highlighting the tools used for the sequencing, annotation, and assessment of the safety of phages for potential therapeutic use. The regulatory aspects of bacteriophage use in different countries will be discussed, along with examples of the use of phage therapy to treat bacterial infections.
