Writing Fiction

Students need have no previous experience of creative writing to enrol on this module.
This module offers an introduction to the writing of fiction. It aims to develop students' ability to compose fictional prose, focusing particularly on control of figurative language, dialogue, register, and genre. By the end of the module, students will be able to demonstrate competence in basic fictional techniques, including characterisation and plotting.
The module is taught in five two-hour workshops in which students read and discuss each other's creative work.
Assessment
- One or two short stories or novel chapters (around 3,000 words) and a reflective commentary (500-1,000 words).
