Spacecraft are at the heart of today’s space age, enabling everything from global communications and navigation to planetary exploration and cutting-edge science. This module introduces you to the exciting field of spacecraft systems engineering, where you will learn how the many different subsystems (e.g. structures, thermal control, power, propulsion, communications, and attitude control) work together to make a mission possible. You will study how spacecraft are designed and operated across their full lifecycle, from launch and orbit dynamics to atmospheric entry and safety considerations, while gaining an appreciation of the trade-offs, technical budgets, and reliability analyses that underpin real engineering decisions. Alongside lectures, you will take part in interactive workshops and problem-solving sessions that develop your ability to analyse and design spacecraft at the preliminary level, using both hand calculations and modern systems approaches. The module draws on Leicester’s rich heritage in space research and mission involvement, with guest lecturers from Space Park Leicester providing insight into cutting-edge developments. You will also have opportunities to interact with real hardware from space missions, bridging theory and practice. By the end, you will have not only a broad technical foundation but also the critical thinking and systems perspective that are essential for tackling the complex challenges of spacecraft design.
