Social Psychology

This module introduces the theories, methods and applications of social psychology and considers the disciplinary boundaries between sociology and social psychology.

Initially, you will learn about the some of the key theoretical ideas in social psychology and how it intersects with sociology. An appreciation of these characteristics will enable you to explore the implications of social psychology for contemporary society.

We will then critically explore both ‘classic’ and ‘contemporary’ exemplars of social psychology research. Exemplars will be from social psychological research on childhood, learning and education, thought and language, work, disability, conformity and persuasion, identity, aggression, attribution, prejudice and attraction.

In workshops we will then explore the practical, methodological, ethical and experimental issues and applications in social psychology. In addition, seminars will be organised around key readings in social psychology – both classic and contemporary studies.
