Introduction to Medical Bioscience
Module code: MB1080
This module will provide a comprehensive introduction to the application of scientific principles to the medical field. We will explore the molecular basis of wound healing, the role of microbes in disease and the importance of genomics to cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Alongside lectures and tutorials, seminars will be used to reinforce techniques used to carry out basic numerical manipulations of scientific measurements, and how to critically analyse experimental data.
Topics covered
The module is structured around three themes which illustrate the importance of bioscience research to contemporary (and future) medicine. These themes are:
- The molecular basis of cancer and the importance of genomic science to the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of cancers
- The importance of the microbiome to broad aspects of human health and disease
- Atherosclerosis and cardiac disease
