Modern European Fiction

Module code: EN3159

If you are interested in reading great 20th century novels in translation, you will want to take this module. Modern European Fiction is an opportunity to study what was happening to the novel beyond Britain in the work of some of the greats of world literature such as Franz Kafka and Albert Camus. Our reading will take in fiction from Stalinist Russia (The Master and Margarita) as well as from Western Europe (The Trial). The module usefully complements the study of modernist as well as post-modernist British literature by providing us with landmark examples such as Death in Venice (modernist) or Calvino’s If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller (postmodernist). This a module for readers who are keen to explore beyond the boundaries of a national curriculum, and should appeal to year-abroad students and anyone with a sense of adventure.
