The Novel Around the World
Module code: EN1020 (double module)
On this module you will read six novels written in varying styles, and drawn from a range of historical and national contexts. You will develop your critical reading skills by looking closely at key formal features of the novel, including characterisation, structure, narrative voice, perspective, and the use or subversion of generic conventions. Focusing on novels written in English and published between the mid-nineteenth-century and the present day, the module will deepen your understanding of the novel form as both an integral part of the English literary tradition, and an increasingly global genre. You will encounter a diversity of literary voices from Britain, India, America and the Caribbean, and consider how each writer’s unique and distinctive engagement with the novel form has contributed to the genre’s flexibility and dynamism.
