Medical devices are defined by the MHRA as “any instrument, apparatus, appliance, software, implant, reagent, material or other article intended by the manufacturer to be used, alone or in combination, for human beings.” As such they cover a vast range of products from bandages and splints to surgical instruments, bone implants and pacemakers. In this module, you will discuss the various classes of medical device and the influence of class on path to the clinic. You will explore the developments in specific medical devices and the role these developments have played in improved patient outcomes. There will also be a focus on prosthetic design and how control methods can be applied.
