The Physics Skills Electives are designed to help you improve your skills and enhance your career options in industry, education, research and/or business.  In this skills elective you will gain an invaluable introduction to physics education including an introduction to the background pedagogy and direct experience in schools.  To gain a place on the module, you will need to be successful in a competitive application process based on commitment and suitability for working in schools.Staff in the School of Education will deliver the first part of the module. You will learn about background pedagogy and effective classroom strategies, and observe lessons and individual pupils in a partnership school to discover how these can be put into practice. This part of the course will involve a large amount of self-guided research and also reflection on your own and others’ practice.

In the second part of the module you will work on a school based placement, visiting a partnership school on a weekly basis to observe and assist in the classroom and act as a positive role model, sharing your passion for the subject and engaging with young people while gaining practical classroom experience.  The schools placement contributes towards the previous experience required for students who subsequently apply to undergo teacher training (e.g. a PGCE).
